Phil Bellamy, of @PhilBellamyInc, a Twitter friend I *didn’t* make during the recent Federal election campaign, has asked me to expand on my view of him as a multi-level marketing scammer.

This came after I noted that Phil was among those who had blocked me during the course of the election campaign.  Another Twitter user asked me “Who is Phil Bellamy anyway?”  My reply was…

@millionsofmyles B4 the election he was the most prolific tweeter on #AusVotes but now has reverted to his multi-level marketing scam mode

And here’s Phil’s “request for further information”…

@MikeFitzAU multi level marketing scam mode? care to expand further? Love to see what you have to say.

If you wish, Phil, I’ll certainly “care to expand further”.  How’s this? …

Phil Bellamy

Now, of course, I don’t know Phil in real life.  His website, philbellamyinc.com, has been in maintenance mode for months.  I can only make my judgements about him based on what I read in his Twitter stream.  Accordingly, I offer as evidence, Phil’s Twitter stream.

As you can see, it contains such classics as…

Clearly, Phil has a way above average interest in the @FiverrMe Twitter account.  I wonder what goes on there?

@FiverrMe

Well @FiverrMe is owned by a person with a female name, which I won’t reproduce here because that could also be some other real person’s name.  Her web page is
www.only2clicks.com/pages/fiverrme.

If you were to click on that link you will see such wonders as:
• “Drive Traffic from Twitter”
• “Starter Twitter + 500 Followers”
• “I’ll DM My Followers For You”
• “Your Product Audio Endorsed”
… in fact, everything you need to know about marketing in a way that disrespects your followers.  I’ve expressed my horror at this mis-use of Twitter before.

So what does @FiverrMe tweet about?  Here’s the first couple of tweets I sampled…

intervista

Fiverr.com appears to be a community of users.  The links in @FiverrMe’s tweets contain numbers (eg 108967) which could identify a “referrer number” or “affiliate number”.  In any case, they land on a page belonging to a Fiverr user (with a male profile photo) called “intervista”.  Intervista is indeed offering to copywrite 10 e-mails or ghost write an ebook for $5.  Sound too good to be true?  It probably is.

Intervista is a talented fellow.  Look what else he offers.

Intervista's other 'gigs'

Intervista will create an audio recording endorsing my product?  Given that I’m pretty sure he has never used any of my products, what would you call this?  “Fake Honesty”?

He’ll also set up a new Twitter account with 2000 new targeted followers.  I wonder what he has promised these people in order to persuade them to become followers?  More “Fake Honesty”?

In either case, would you use this “Fake Honesty” to sell your products?  Is it worth the damage to your reputation when you are found out?  “Fake Honesty” has a negative value.

A Scam

Now, let’s look at what is a scam.  I think it is fair to say that persuading people to part with money in return for something of no (or even negative) value, is a scam.  Not illegal, but still a scam.

Summary

Finally, let’s check through the tweet that Phil wanted expanded further.

  • B4 the election he was the most prolific tweeter on #AusVotes
I don’t think Phil has any problem with this.
  • but now has reverted
There is evidence that Phil had a keen interest in affiliate marketing well before the election, eg his tweet “How To Mask Your Affiliate Links Using PHP” back in February 2010.  During the election campaign, Phil tweeted prolificly into the #AusVotes stream, no doubt adding a large number of followers.  He is now disrespecting those new followers by cluttering up their Twitter feed with marketing spam.
  • to his multi-level marketing
Let’s see, Intervista is selling “fake honesty” at $5 a throw.  (That’s one level.)  If the victim has come from one of @FiverrMe’s affiliate links, she’s in for a cut.  (That’s two levels.)  Phil is not incurring the damage to his brand for nothing.  He is being recompensed in some way, monetary or intangible.  (That’s three levels; multi-level marketing.)
  • scam mode
I’ll ask you, dear readers (and Phil Bellamy) “Is selling fake honesty a scam?”
