Phone Senator Conroy

Mon 2 Feb 2009

Parliament resumes tomorrow.  I think we should all phone Senator Conroy to ask what socks and/or shoes to wear.  Or maybe what to eat for lunch?  After all, he has volunteered to make our decisions for us.

In fact, let’s phone him every day for our decisions, large and small, until he drops his wasteful and ineffective scheme to censor Australia’s internet.  Leave a comment below to let us all know what decisions you have referred to Senator Conroy by phone.

Phone Senator Stephen Conroy at his Parliamentary office on 02 6277 7480 or at his Ministerial office on 03 9650 1188.

I’m going out for coffee. What would you like?
Hang on. I have to ask Senator Stephen Conroy.
Who’s that?
Minister for censorship. He believes Australians can’t make their own decisions. So…
whenever I have to decide something, I call his Parliamentary office on “02 6277 7480″.
If he’s not there, I try his Ministerial office on “03 9650 1188″.
Hello Stephen. What coffee do I prefer?
Filtered.

If anyone doesn’t know why we are phoning Senator Conroy, see my earlier posts:

Also go to libertus.net to see Irene Graham’s thoroughly-researched history of how our Labor government has introduced this censorship by stealth.

Thanks to a real cartoonist Stephanie McMillan for the inspiration and thanks to (I think it was) Websinthe aka Kieran Salsone who Tweeted the punchline on Saturday.

Thanks Aurelius. I don’t want to be famous. I just want my children to grow up in an Australia without an easily-manipulated censorship scheme.

Comment moderation is in use. Please do not submit your comment twice — it will appear shortly…. Ummm Is it just me or is there irony there?

  13. MikeFitz Says:

DaithiRua, I don’t know whether you operate a blog or not but have you ever *SEEN* comment spam? I use Akismet but a lot of rubbish still gets through.

There are people who sell “comment writing services”. Here’s one: “I will write and post 20 intelligent and relevant comments on authority sites on your behalf for $5″
    Offer to sell comment spam

There are armies of lowly-paid folks in third-world countries creating such “intelligent” comment spam.

Here’s a sample of the sort of comments that would be posted by these services…

    • “I coulden’t have said it any better my self, the author know what he is talking about. I can tell from the comments above that most people agree to.”
    • “Well, I believe that clears up a few issues for me. How about anybody else?”
    • “This is such a wicked site you have. I have bookmarked it, and will come back many times. Your website has been a great guide. Thanks.”

If I didn’t use comment moderation, these would have appeared on my blog.

I’ve not approved these comments because:

    1. They don’t add anything to the conversation,
    2. They would make just as much sense if they had been added to the post before this one or the post after this one,
    3. Their sole purpose is to create a link back to the spammer’s website which too often will be a source of malware. I wouldn’t like my readers being lured there.

I do not recall ever censoring a comment just because it was negative. Have a look around; you’ll find many examples of negative comments that have been approved. Let me know if you would like me to point some of them out.
