Still Alive

Mon 13 Oct 2008

Haven’t heard from Mike for a while?  again?  Well, he’s still alive.

The South American adventure was just wonderful and fortunately incident-free healthwise - up until the second-last day.  :( Long story short, there was an unfortunate confluence of events.

The faint-hearted should not read beyond this point.  Things I learned:

  1. Let’s just say Argentinian steak is excellent, but…
  2. Having your water confiscated by security before a trans-Pacific flight where it was also hard to obtain drinks is really bad for people who are susceptible to dehydration.
  3. Catching a cold/flu and having a serious sneezing/coughing fit is really bad for people with abdominal walls weakened by previous surgery.
  4. Three loops of small bowel that end up outside the abdominal wall, threatening to crimp off and go gangrenous will cause frequent spasms of take-your-breath-away pain.
  5. The staff in the surgical ward at Sunnybank Private Hospital are really excellent - even the physiotherapist.

Most staff at hospitals are excellent… Physios have to be… they are targets for all sorts of verbal volleys… but always seem to leave with the broader smile…

Knew you were west of healthy… damn mate… Mrs Fitz is probably furious with you… I dont know what is worse… spasmodic abdominal pain or spasmodic back pain… hmmmm get well soon…
