Australia Day BBQ / Pool Party

Fri 25 Jan 2008

Yep, Australia Day tomorrow and the boys are organising their annual Australia Day Pool Party/BBQ again at our place.

Australian Flag in the pool for Australia Day

Check out the photos of last year’s party which was a tremendous success.  Dugie tells me that he and I both make it in the top 5 google images hits for “australia day bbq“.

I had to drive Pete’s car today because he borrowed the 4WD to pick up Andy’s batch of home brew from the bottling joint.  It’s all now on ice, ready to go.

The event was advertised on Facebook months ago. (Not publicly, though.)  If 500 people show up, I’m gonna hafta pretend Corey Delaney organised it.

Have a good one, Mike. I’ll be sweating it out in the Punmu Store - the locals don’t see a lot to celebrate today - for obvious reasons. I keep telling them it is Sydney’s birthday :)

Stuart, glad you made it. Mrs Fitz was disappointed you didn’t bring the family.

Archie: Yeah, “Invasion Day” doesn’t really have the same ring to it, does it? We need some other reason for a national holiday at the height of summer. Like our American friends have July 4 and Queen Liz celebrates her birthday in June because it’s good weather for a parade in London. Maybe the rest of Australia could share Melbourne’s Cup Holiday in November?

Or we could use WA’s day - Foundation Day at the end of February. It is going to be difficult to find a “State-Free” day we could all agree on. It’s a pity Federation was on a New Years Day.

Hi Mike, You don’t know me at all! I was just wondering if you took the photo of the flag in the water! It is a great shot. I first saw this photo in a very recent Teds Camera House Australia Day photography competition. I am wondering if you entered it or did someone just steal the photo from Google Images?? The eventual winner of the competiton (which was announced today) also just happened to be on Google Images. I have a feeling there is a bit of ’stealing’ photos and entering them in competitions! Thanks for your time! Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

If it’s the photo I’m thinking of, my #1 son Peter took the shot on Australia Day 2007, #2 son Andy (who staged the shot) uploaded it to Flickr and released it under a creative commons attribution sharealike licence. I used it in three blog posts and it has been #1 on Google Images search for “Australia Day Pool Party” for about two years.

No, we haven’t entered it in any competitions.
