A Wedding at the Fitzies and Talent on the Tennis Court

Thu 19 Apr 2007

Last weekend, there was a wedding at the Fitzies.  Our good friends Dianne and Dan were married in our back yard.

Everything went well; the minister was great; timing was perfect; music worked on cue; the weather was fine.  (Actually, in south-east Queensland, we’re on Level 5 water restrictions.  If it had rained, everyone would have cheered.)

Now this is the second marriage for both Dan & Di.  They both have grown-up children.  And here’s where the biggest shock of the day came; I had no idea that we were to host such talent.

It turns out that Di’s son, Stephen Thomas and his lovely Georgian wife Kate Zaalishvili are professional ballroom dancers in Europe.  They had flown out from the UK for the wedding and treated the guests to some remarkable performances on our tennis court.

So here’s the new deal for wedding receptions: You don’t have to dance the bridal waltz, provided you have offspring who can do it better!

When I find time, I’ll have to post some video taken later that night of the multi-talented Kate playing our piano and singing in her native Georgian.

And finally, best wishes to all the other bloggers out there planning weddings, including Brisbane blogger Cee and Samer Al Ramahi in Amman, Jordan.  There’s a bit of it about; one of my sisters is getting re-married this Friday.

PS: Steph, There was no Bogan-like behaviour.

Wow, that is pretty impressive paving, Mike! I couldn’t manage anything like that.

  2. MikeFitz Says:

Hi Redcap, I did all the original paving (lots of cutting) 25 years ago, but, I have to confess, it was recently re-grouted by a professional.

Yeah RIGHT! I bet you got magotted and fell down drunk! :P

Very cool indeed, Mike. And a heck of a back-yard.

You want to come and finish mine for me?

  5. MikeFitz Says:

Steph, I bet you’re just saying that because I didn’t have to drive home. As it turned out, I had to follow the bride and groom home at 1am in my 4WD carrying all the wedding presents that they couldn’t possibly squeeze into their own car. And it had to be done that night because they were flying off to their honeymoon Greek Islands cruise in the morning.

Ashleigh, there are other photos of another part of the yard at the Australia Day Pool Party post.

wow, I wish I could dance like that. Mostly I end up stepping on my partner’s toes and then trying to lead.

  7. MikeFitz Says:

Hi Mez, yep, they were pretty impressive. Stepping on toes is exactly how the rest of us dance.

I want to know why everyone would cheer if it rained during the wedding. Do you also consider it as a sign of blessing from the heaven? In modern wedding settings, everybody wish for a fair weather. A fair weather promises more fun for everyone attending the wedding. A rainy day, on the other hand, hampers everything. It means No for everything. Also, it means inconvenience for everybody.

I want to congratulate you for those remarkable shots when Stephen and Kate danced. Those photos are perfect! You got it all right – correct timing, proper background, and of course the perfect dancers.

G’day, Wedding Portrait Photos, purveyor of fine wedding imagery and excessive praise. Congratulations on the best constructed comment spam I have ever received.

Just in case anyone else really wants to know the answer to your question, eastern Australia has missed its usual rainy seasons for the past 10 years and the last six years have been the driest ever recorded. Our dams are now below 20% full and serious water restrictions are in place. If it had rained, everyone would have cheered.

    Mr Hobson hath aged! :P

    Looks like fun :)

    Cheers
