“The Glass House†Axed!
Wed 1 Nov 2006Shattered Shards Scattered; Satirical Scripts Shredded!
Really angry tonight! At the end of tonight’s episode of The Glass House, Wil Anderson announced that the year’s final episode on November 29 would be the last Glass House ever.
I smell political interference from spoil-sports who don’t enjoy satire. Or maybe they don’t like the way The Glass House alerts many young people to political issues. You know young people. They’re the ones who generally don’t vote for 1950’s conservative values.
The Glass House’s Guestbook is choked with hundreds of messages condemning the decision and supporting the cast and crew of the show.
Ashleigh has had a suitably angry rant over at Ashleigh’s Dump. He points out that an ABC spokes-person said…
“We’re not axing the show but we’re not going to commission it next year.â€
What’s the difference? The effect on the viewing public is the same. Oh wait! One of them involves lower lawyers fees.
As I said in a post on television last March…
Something I really enjoyed as our kids got older was the whole family howling with laughter at “Good News Week†or “The Glass Houseâ€. My wife and I enjoyed seeing our kids laugh even more than the jokes. I’d hate to miss that.
A hiding
Our poor ABC has certainly taken a hiding lately. No more staff-appointed member on the board. Dumping Chris Masters’ book, Jonestown because it might show Johnny’s mate Alan Jones in a poor light. Now no more The Glass House.
What’s next?
– Margaret and David at the Right-Wing Only Movies?
– Alan Kohler reporting only upswings in the T3 share price?
– Clarke & Dawe reduced to miming on the 7:30 Report?
7:30 Report on Toxic Childhood
And speaking of the 7:30 Report: In early October, I posted that the 7:30 Report was working on a story looking at the impact of computer games, TV, junk food and academic pressure on child development. The story went to air this evening. Here’s the transcript.
But back to the main topic, Corrine Grant summed up the situation, thus: The ABC doesn’t have a lot of money. Maybe it was the difference between our show and The 7:30 Report getting a new stapler.

Hear hear…
I have started reading Jonestown, it’s already twisted as hell. Determining what is fact and what is fantasy from Alan Jones’ background is a nightmare!

Hasn’t the ABC and SBS gone down the tubes. Here we are paying SBS to run a TV station full of advertising. They won’t admit it but the Governement is indirectly controling the ABC via funding.

Stuart: I thought about pre-ordering my copy of Jonestown as soon as I heard the ABC had dumped it. But honestly, I don’t need any book to tell me that Alan Jones is sewerage-pond slime. I can tell that by the divisive bile that comes out of his mouth.
Huggies: I think we need to rally around our ABC. The present government is clearly trying to cripple it, then close it down and force us all over to the Murdoch-Packer pay-to-watch advertorial/infotainment world. The ABC is our last hope for unbiased, free-to-air news and comment.
As for SBS, well at least the advertisements are generally corralled into blocks between programs. And they’re not always running 13 minutes late like the commercial stations — forcing us to record 13 minutes of drivel at the beginning and lose 13 minutes at the end of every program we record.

Hi Mike,
I was disappointed to hear the show was closing down as well.
