The Good Doctor goes Silver

Local lad Greg Low (aka “The Good Doctor”) was appointed one of Australia’s two Microsoft Regional Directors back in February this year. Now, at an RD dinner held earlier this week in conjunction with Tech-Ed in Boston, Greg was awarded a prestigious Silver Award for Global Reach.

For many years, Greg has chaired two monthly user group meetings in Brisbane; the Qld MSDN User Group and the Qld SQL Server User Group. Since joining Readify, he has spent much of his time on interstate assignments. (Hence his other nickname, Greg “No fixed abode” Low.) But this hasn’t slowed him down one bit. He’s just met more developers and DBAs to help.

His RD appointment was, no doubt, in recognition of his efforts in fostering Australian .NET and SQL Server communities. We all appreciate his efforts at increasing the signal-to-noise ratio on the [aus-dotnet] and [SQLDownUnder] mailing lists.

Now with his podcasts of interviews with SQL Server luminaries and presentations at PASS, Barcelona and Tech-Ed, Boston, Greg certainly does have a Global Reach.

Congratulations, Greg. The award might come from Microsoft, but it’s all us little guys you’ve helped along the way who are cheering the loudest.

The Queen’s Birthday: What does it mean to me?

The Queen’s birthday: Australia’s least significant public holiday, celebrated today (June 12) in eastern Australia, on October 2 in Western Australia and on April 21 by Betty Windsor herself.

Of course, we good Republicans aren’t really taking the day off.  (For American readers, that’s “Republican” as in “Not Monarchist”. Not to be confused with “Republican” as in “George Bush fan-boy”.)  No, unfortunately our Prime Minister has turned us all into tax collectors and we are busy bashing our BASs into shape for the approaching end of the financial year.

But what does it mean to me?

The Queen’s birthday is the day I’m reminded that I have yet to forgive John Howard for his cynical manipulation of the 1999 Republic Referendum question.

The full horror of what John Howard has done to us was driven home in the last second of the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.  England’s star Jonny Wilkinson booted that magnificent drop-goal in extra-time to defeat Australia.  And there, in the grandstand, was Prince Harry, grandson of the so-called “Queen of Australia”, cheering Australia’s defeat.

The Scobleizer leaves Microsoft

It’s the Queen’s Birthday weekend in eastern Australia. Where were you when Robert Scoble confirmed he was leaving Microsoft?

Good Luck, Robert, with your new position at PodTech.  Keep in touch with your loyal followers.

Also, keep us in touch with your part of the real world.  (I love Yellowstone, the world’s first National Park.  I was there in 1990, on my No 3 son’s first birthday.  It was April, and those boardwalks were half covered in snow.  That evening, we celebrated in a family restaurant in Bozeman, Montana, a lovely university town.)

And finally, best wishes to your family.  It is what life is about.

I’ve just updated the Queensland Developer Events page.

This time around, I’ve added an RSS feed to the page.  This will subscribe to just that one page, not my whole blog.  Now, because it is a WordPress Page, not a standard blog Post, I’ve had to do some digging around in the database to get the feed to recognise the update.  I think I’ve got it right.  <crosses fingers>

So, please subscribe to the page and let me know if the subscription doesn’t work for you.

PS. Don’t miss Wardy’s IT Community Dinner on Tuesday night.
